“In speaking with Marcia Smith, I discovered how, even in an industry that has been traditionally male since the first mine was mined, many men are accepting of women in leadership. Marcia had an interesting perspective on that.”
It was incredibly daunting to be a general manager of a mine. Traditionally, general managers were men, and I was the first female in Teck's history of mining to be leading one of those operations. Nor did I have the traditional education and skill set that a general manager would typically have. That's been the pattern in the history of the company and in fact, most mining companies, but the person who took the job full time after me was a man without an engineering degree, so my presence broke down more than one barrier.
The most powerful stories for me were in the beginning, before I even started working at Line Creek. A woman manager in our finance group in Vancouver came up to me and said that a director position was available but she didn't initially apply for it because she didn't see women in senior positions and she didn't think she would get it. Then she saw the announcement about my becoming general manager of Line Creek and she applied for the director position and got it.
I hadn't even started working at the mine, yet the assignment was already having a positive impact in the organization. Women are looking for role models and seeing a woman in a leadership role gives others the belief that they can do it as well and succeed.
It's also important for men to see women in leadership roles. When I think back to the reaction of the male supervisors at Line Creek and even the frontline men while I was there: one third were enthusiastic and supportive and saw it as a sign of the future; one third had gotten past the fact that I was a woman, accepted it, and moved on with getting business done; and one third had a hard time getting past it. It was heartening to know that two thirds of the men were great with it and with moving our organization forward.8
